Who created PIPS Community
Lifeguards training?
The development and delivery
of the training is a partnership
between PIPS (a North Belfast
suicide prevention imitative)
and Stakeholder Development
(a training consultancy). These
two organisations have a long
history of working together
and won a joint National Training
Award in 2006 for their work
in Northern Ireland. By
combining the expertise of PIPS
in suicide prevention and Stakeholder
Development in training within
the community, both the content
and delivery of the programme
is guaranteed.
Is there evidence that
it works?
The performance of the programme
is monitored using before and
after questionnaires. Results
from these questionnaires show
an average improvement of over
70% in participants understanding
and confidence in their ability
to prevent suicide.
How is PIPS Community
Lifeguards Training different
from ASIST?
ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention
Skills) is a two day training
workshop for individuals who
want to feel more comfortable,
confident and competent in helping
to prevent the immediate risk
of suicide in a crisis situation.
PIPS Community Lifeguards
is for members of communities
who need to know when to get
help for those at risk.
PIPS Community Lifeguards
Training is different from ASIST
in that:
1. It
was created in Northern Ireland
and has a local focus
2. It
is one day long with the option
of delivery over two half days
/ evenings
3. It
can be adapted and tailored
to meet participants’ needs
For more information on ASIST
go to www.livingworks.net
Is it accredited?
The programme is not currently
accredited, however Stakeholder
Development are a Matrix accredited
training provider.
We are currently working
with OCN NI to develop an accredited
Unit titles “Introduction to
Suicide Prevention” which we
hope will be available in 2009.
Do I need any prior knowledge
or experience?
No - PIPS Community Lifeguards
Training is for EVERYBODY. Suicide
can affect anyone and any community.
For this reason the training
has been designed to be useful,
interesting and engaging regardless
of whether participants have
any prior knowledge around suicide.
The training equips participants
with increased knowledge and
understanding as well as the
confidence to talk about suicide
and potentially help to save
lives.
